“I can’t log in!”
The voice on the phone hissed angrily. “Do something, it’s been like it all day.”
Jeff checks his emails. No order notifications. Odd as it’s their busy day of the week where most orders are taken in time for the weekend.
He logs in, except the login page looks off.
A call to 2 members of staff confirms the same.
They are locked out.
Jeff feels it in his stomach, a rising sense of dread that something very bad is happening…
He spends an hour trying to remember the hosting details for the site and resetting the password. He logs in and clicks around a little, hoping for inspiration but staring at the rows of buttons, he might as well be sat in the cockpit of a fighter plane.
Another 30 minutes go by chatting with support who tell him it’s not a hosting problem and he needs to speak to his developer.
He can’t even remember the name of the freelancer who built it 4 years ago.
He quickly fires off some emails after googling website support companies.
One reply comes straight back from GorillaHub Support. Access granted, he leaves them to it while trying to calm down more customers.
They day passes in a blur of firefighting and apologies. The report from GorillaHub comes back informing him his site is back online. Cold comfort against a backdrop of complaints.
By the end of the day, 40% of their takings are gone.. The brand reputation they work so hard to build? Badly damaged.
This is a nightmare! He almost smiles as the irony that today’s date is 31st October is not lost on him.
Over a video call later that day, Craig explained what had happened.
The site was hacked a few weeks ago. Code added, lying dormant.
Waiting.
The checkout page is now quietly rerouting customers to a fake page in Vietnam that’s attempting to capture logins and skimming credit card numbers.
Turns out, the site hadn’t been updated in months. No security monitoring. No backups.
If they’d had a Website Care Plan with GorillaHub, alerts would’ve gone off the moment something looked wrong. The breach would’ve been blocked, and the site restored before lunch. He couldn’t believe it when Craig told him they start at just £1/day. He wished his other insurances were that cheap.
Jeff signed up for their best plan on spot and would have been happy to pay twice as much for the peace of mind to prevent this happening ever again.
Instead, he learned the hard way that not having a web partner can cost him much more.
